Play: KidsQuest Children's Museum

We finally got a chance to try out KidsQuest Children's Museum in Bellevue. I've been posting about events at the museum for a few months now and it was nice to finally put a "face to the name".

I took advantage of the Free Museum Passes program through KCLS and picked up a set of tickets two weeks before we wanted to go. You should definitely check out this program and snag some free tickets, too. It's a great way to try out a museum to see if you'd be interested in getting a membership.

We got to KidsQuest right after 10 a.m. after circling the parking lot trying to find the best entrance to use (the entrance next to Target works well). There was a group or two of preschoolers and a moms group already there. But even with a few groups it wasn't too busy or crowded. We've been to Imagine Children's Museum on a very busy field trip day and it was a little overwhelming for both me and Finley.

The museum is just the right size - not too big that you're worried about losing a kid but it has more than enough to keep your kids busy for a few hours or more.

We started off in The Garage Exhibit. Grady was IN LOVE with the big truck. No surprise there. He is  totally into cars and trucks and anything with wheels these days.

While Finley was busy playing with all the other displays...

...Grady was doing laps through the truck.

Next it was time for some water play at the Waterways Exhibit. This was by far my kids' favorite part. They had so much fun trying out all the areas. They only made it through about half of the displays before they were pretty wet, so we tried out The Backyard so they could dry out a bit.

The Backyard is an enclosed area for kids 3 and under. There were kids of all ages playing. Crawling babies up to big kids like Finley.

There are cute little birdhouses with different displays and games.

And a nice big train table. They also have a puppet theater, blankets and chairs to make forts with, and a little climbing structure.

Next it was time for some more water fun. Finley and Grady could have stayed here all day long.

It was around lunchtime so we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.

Finley had a great time playing on the pipe fountain table. Though by the end the water was just flowing straight onto her. And then I found Grady with the pockets of the bib FULL of water.

So when the kids started shivering we called it quits and headed to Target for a new set of clothes. My biggest piece of advice if you're headed to KidsQuest Museum, or really any museum with a water play area --- bring an extra set of clothes!

Taking two soaking wet kids shopping for clothes (while of course scouring the clearance racks for the best deal) is not so much fun. And then trying to change them both in the public restroom while they're putting their hands into every dirty space possible... yeah, not so much fun either. But, two dry kids in cute new outfits and a bag of popcorn and all was well!

Play, Stay Away or Just Okay
This museum gets a Play from me! We had a great time here. After writing this up and looking at their website a bit I realized that we didn't even play with half the stuff there. (They have a great treehouse but I just couldn't swing it on my own with two kids.) I'm sure we'll be back again for another soaking soon!

If you're looking for more outings with your kids, check out the Play Reviews page.

Play: Great Play of Northshore

I'm not big on organized activities and classes. They usually come with an organized activity price tag. And a commitment to be somewhere at a certain time. (Why, oh, why, do the kids decide to sleep in on the one day I forget to set the alarm and we have somewhere to be? I guess it's the law of having children.)

But I'm a convert. I was from the moment Robin from Northshore Great Play responded to my email about trying out a class. (Great Play lets you try out your first class for free! And you all know who loves free! Me!) Robin was super nice over email and super-duper nice in person.

Sorry for the blurry pics. Blurry photos = kids having loads of fun.
We tried out the Intro Motor Skill class for kids 20 months to 3 1/2. (Grady was a little young for this class but he did just fine.) Great Play is pretty much great from the start. They have a nice waiting area with toys that keeps kids busy from the get-go.

The class starts out with little free-play to get the kids warmed up and then circle time with songs and introductions.

Grady's first favorite activity

During the circle time the coaches set up the equipment for 3 different activities. At each class they focus on locomotor, stability and manipulative skills. For this class there was a fishing pond, an obstacle course and a climbing area. The coaches were there to help and encourage the kids through each of the areas. They could try them all out or stick to the same one (Finley was a big fan of the fishing, as were most of the kids!)

Throughout the 50 minute class, the mascot "Buddy" was playing games on the 8 big screens around the room. He plays peek-a-boo, showing up on the different screens. Chasing Buddy around the room was Grady's second favorite activity.

Then it was game time. The coaches led them through a game of putting different objects in their buckets and bringing them back to the big bucket. I wish I had more to say about this part. I was too busy watching Finley listen to instructions from the coaches to pay attention to the actual game. She never listens to me like that!

After that, it was bubble time. This was probably Grady's favorite part. The kid loves to look at  bubbles, loves to pop bubbles, loves to say the word "bubble." Everything is a bubble to him.

Next it was time for a little more playing. They brought out lots of big blocks and hung two swings from the ceiling. The swings might look like swings from the park but they're totally not. However they hang them from the ceiling makes them swing really far and long. I wish I had a picture of Finley swinging along. She was mesmerized by it.

The class ended with a good-bye circle time. As I said before we don't have much experience with organized activities and classes. This was apparent by Finley's lack of enthusiasm during the welcome circle time. But by the time the good-bye circle was in formation, she was singing right along with all the other kids. I call that a success!

Details
Great Play offers Intro Motor Skills classes for kids as young as 6 months all the way up to Sports Skills classes for 5th graders. The prices aren't exactly for the frugal-minded (a 4-week pass is $75 and $67 for siblings). But their prices seem to be comparable to other gyms and classes. (For instance, Gymboree classes are $69 for a month.) As an added benefit, Great Play offers free Open Gym sessions 3 times a week for kids enrolled in a class.

Or if you don't want to commit to a weekly class, you can always pay $10 for their Open Gym sessions.

Play, Stay Way, or Just Okay
With a name like Great Play, I have to give this place a Play rating. :)

There were a lot of things I loved about Great Play. First, it's super-duper clean to the max. And when I say clean, I mean spotless clean. I have been to a few other gym-type facilities and I was reaching for the hand sanitizer every 5 minutes. Robin said she makes cleaning a big priority at her location and I appreciate that. All the equipment looks nice and new, too, which makes for a great first impression.

I also love that this is an activity that I can do with both kids. I know I'm not the only one out there with two kids close in age but at different activity levels. This class is perfect for them. It's also well structured with coaches who are very helpful and encouraging.

Oh, and the other great part? The drive home takes us right past Caffe Ladro, Daniel's all time favorite coffee place. With a weekly delivery of his favorite latte, I'm sure I can convince him to sign off on a 4-week pass for the kids!

Mill Creek YMCA: Play Time

The Mill Creek YMCA holds an indoor Play Time for kids age 18 months to 5 years every Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Like the Mukilteo YMCA Tot Time, this is adult supervised play time. It's your time to have some fun running around with your kids. It's free for members and $15 for non-members. (I want to check to see if this is for one session, in which case this is crazy expensive for an outing. But I guess if you want to make a day of it you could also take the kids swimming, too.)

Finley and I went to check it out this week. I finally managed to get to the YMCA for a workout and afterwards we headed to the gym for some play time. There were lots of hula hoops, balls, play tents, etc. But it's really not about the toys. It's all about the HUGE gym to run around in. I was even having fun running around in such a big space.

I couldn't get Finley to stop long enough to take a picture. That's a sign of a good time!

When: Wednesdays 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Cost: Free for members. $15 for non-members.

Lynnwood Library: Toddler Play and Learn Group

The Lynnwood Library hosts a toddler play and learn group every Thursday from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Activities include open play, making friends, art, stories and music. This sounds like a great play group for my kiddos. I've tried out story times at a few local libraries but sometimes the kids have a hard time sitting still. And it's difficult to find an activity for both an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old. I'm going to try out this play group for sure.

Update: We had a great time at this activity. Check out all the details!

Where: Lynnwood Library (19200 44th Ave West Lynnwood, WA)
When: Thursdays, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Bellevue Art & Frame and The Toy Place: LEGO Meetup

I'm loving this place more and more! Bellevue Art & Frame and The Toy Place hosts a monthly LEGO meetup on the second Wednesday of the month from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. for the 5 & over crowd. An hour of pure LEGO building fun! I'm really looking forward to the day when we're finally out of the put-everything-in-the-mouth phase and we can move on to the ouch-ouch-ouch-I-just-stepped-on-a-lego phase.

If you're like me and you have younger kids, check out their Masterpiece Mondays. I took Finley there this week and she had a great time. A few more years and we'll be at LEGO time!

Miller Library: Nature Themed Story Program

I was poking around on the University of Washington Botanic Gardens website looking for fun events for kids and found this nature themed story program. Actually what caught my eye was the December 17th program. It includes the book Chipmunk Song by Joanne Ryder. Which has absolutely nothing to do with the Alvin and the Chipmunks song The Chipmunk Song (All I Want For Christmas). But it caught my attention since The Chipmunk Song is currently Finley's all time favorite song and whenever she isn't talking or whining, she is singing that song. (Can you tell I'm just a little tired of hearing "me I want a hula-hoop!"?)

Anyway, I'm thinking of checking this out soon. There are stories and an activity each month that celebrate gardens, plants and nature. Sounds like it's fun for the kids and a great learning opportunity. It's a bit of a drive but combined with a walk around the campus it could be a fun and frugal day out!

Bellevue Art & Frame: Masterpiece Mondays

Bellevue Art & Frame holds art classes for the younger crowd every Monday from 10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Each week the kids can make masterpieces using real art supplies.

I would love to take Finley to this class but I'm not sure what to do with Grady. We might try it out and see if I can entertain him on the sidelines so Finley can get her art on. The girl loves to paint.

Update: We went and we loved it! Check out my review here!

Mukilteo YMCA: Tot Time

After spending Monday doing the required chores of life - grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, dishes, etc., it was time to get out of the house and let the kids play.

We decided to check out the Tot Time at Mukilteo YMCA. And I'm so glad we did. This will be going on my "Oh my gosh. I'm going crazy at home. We need to go somewhere." rotation.

Time to bounce
The Mukilteo YMCA opens up the gym for playtime twice a week. They have quite a few cars, bicycles, play tents, balls, cones, bean bags, and best of all - a bouncy castle.

I promise she had a good time. This is her "say cheese" smile.
Both kids had a great time. There was enough to keep them entertained for an hour and a half. There were quite a few other kids that came and went but it wasn't too crowded at all. If you have a YMCA membership and you're looking to get out of the house and run your kids around I definitely recommend Tot Time. Maybe we'll see you there!

Details ---
Where: Mukilteo YMCA (10601 47th Place West Mukilteo, WA)
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (Call or check the website for current days/times)
Cost: Free for members; $3 for Program Participants
