Crafts

Here are some fun inside activities to keep your sanity toddler entertained.

We've been stuck at home with colds for the past few days which means we've been watching way too much TV. I decided to give Mr. Netflix a break and find something easy and entertaining for the kids to do. And Flubber did the trick. This stuff is great. It's easy to mix up, keeps the kids happy for a while and there's really no clean up!

I knew these two little kids were not going to wait patiently while I got dinner ready tonight so I pulled another trick out of my Pinterest bag - Finger Painting Bags. This is genius. I mean completely and totally genius. Finger painting without the mess of finger painting. How cool is that?

Ahhh... the wonders of popsicle sticks. It's amazing just how many things you can do with them.

A few months ago I had these big ideas of putting together little toddler busy bags for my son and daughter. I was going to buy all the supplies, get little projects together, put them in nicely labeled bags so I could whip them out at a moment's notice.

I got the idea of doing some crafts with Froot Loops from a friend of mine. Finley was so excited when I pulled out a box of yummy looking cereal. She looked a little upset when she realized they were for a craft, but she quickly got on board when I told her she could eat the leftovers that we didn't use for the rainbow.

Who doesn't love Oobleck? I remember my mom making this for us growing up. I have vague recollections of her making us play with it outside though. And I can see why. It can get a bit messy.

I love this idea. I especially love it the day after the Fall time change when the kids are all messed up on their sleep and the little one does the whole fall-asleep-in-the-car-for-15-minutes-and-call-it-a-nap thing and the older one is O-O-C (out of control). So after that kind of day, I decided to try this out.

Here's a fun and super easy project to keep your kids entertained and happy for hours and hours and hours. I guarantee it! ;) If you're anything like me the hardest part will be a trip to the craft store with the kids. (Why, oh, why do I always choose to go to the store right before lunchtime?)

After a busy few days (I had no idea that birthday festivities for a 3-year-old could be so exhausting!) I decided we would have a stay-at-home day and do nothing at all. Luckily Finley was more than ok with this and came up with her own game to play. She picked up some popsicle sticks and started making letters!

If you're a parent and you're on Pinterest then I'm sure you've seen the melted crayon hearts project. Since we're having an art themed party for Finley I decided it was the perfect time to turn a Pinterest pin into a real project. I had quite a few "learn from my mistake" moments so listen closely!

Easy Bird Feeder

I've been wanting to make a pine cone (or pie corn as Finley calls them!) bird feeder with Finley for the past few weeks but every time we go out for a walk all I find is soggy, wet pine cones. (Not really a surprise, it's October in the northwest after all.) See More →

Making playdough on a rainy day. What could be easier? I dunno. Maybe anything else that doesn't involve little fingers, clumsy toddlers, lots of flour, food coloring and a hot stove. Next time I will be doing less of the "get the kids involved" thing and more of the "get it done without them" thing. Finley had fun in the end so it was all worth it of course! ...

I found this lovebird Valentine's craft on Meet the Dubiens while pinning away on Pinterest the other day. It's really easy, you probably have all the supplies already (if you don't just make do with what you have) and there's no mess! That's my kind of craft.

I found this cute paper heart on Pinterest last night and decided I had to make it right away. I love crafting projects that don't actually require much crafting - the paper and staples crafts. Totally easy and totally doable. I couldn't find a tutorial for it so I just followed the picture and made it up as I went along. If you have older kids, I'm sure they could help out. Since my kids are still toddlers, I made them some popcorn, turned on Kipper and enjoyed a little time to myself.

I packed away all our Christmas decorations the other day (except for the Christmas tree which I predict will remain in the corner of the living room for a few more weeks). Our mantel was looking very bare without the cheery Christmas crafts Finley worked so hard on, so I decided it was time for some more Valentine's decorations.

I wonder if posting about Valentine's crafts before December is even over is like stores that put up Christmas decorations in November or October? If so, I'm sorry. But it had to be done.

Here's a little turkey craft to get you in the Thanksgiving spirit. I found this craft idea from Enchanted Learning. I love this project since it uses your kid's hand and foot prints. (I can finally understand why my mom held on to all our preschool art projects! I don't think I'll be able to let go of anything with my kid's little hand and foot prints on it.)

We've kind of been slackers with the Christmas decorations this year. Part laziness, part fear of what the boy will destroy. We're still trying to decide what we'll do about a Christmas tree this year. Anyone have any experience with a very adventurous 18-month-old boy and a tree? I'm kind of afraid he'll pull an ELF stunt and jump on it from the couch.

I'm so excited that Finley is a little bit older and we can start some Christmas traditions. I'm starting to feel the pressure though - only 16 days until Christmas! Time to get going on all the Christmas crafts and activities! Today we started by writing a letter to Santa.

I wanted to get an advent calendar this year for Finley. She seems to understand a bit more about Christmas (or at least Santa Claus and presents) so I thought it would be fun to do a countdown to the big day. I took a look at the calendars at University bookstore in Mill Creek. But they were $7.00 for a simple paper one without any yummy chocolate. No chocolate, no thank you. I figured I could make my own and save the $7.00 for a treat.

This was way more structured than I usually am, with the whole "S" theme and all. I printed out the snowman and a few "S" coloring sheets. It was kind of fun to have a theme and letter of the day. I might do a few more of these ahead of time and have them ready to go for a quick and easy craft time.
